Taste of the South

My folks came back from Florida bearing gifts. Along with the usual oranges, grapefruit (my fave!) and paper shell pecans, there was a surprise - a big old bag of JIMMY DEAN SAUSAGE!!!!! Yeah, baby!

You may remember that "American-style" sausage is wildly popular in our home. You can't get Jimmy Dean up here and the pork sausage that we get in this area is, quite frankly, disgusting. It's made mostly from fat and cereal and whenever I eat it (which is not often) it always tastes to me like they didn't wash the pig before they made him into sausage.

There is one brand of sausage that we can get here that closely resembles "American-style" sausage. It is called "Brown and Serve" or something like that and I think it is made by Swift. It comes in packages of 10 itty bitty sausage links and costs a whopping $3.99! Needless to say, we don't eat it often at that price, but occasionally I will break down and get it when I'm jonesing for some real sausage. Other times I make my own sausage. It's not that hard: you just buy ground pork, add the seasonings and mix it all together and then cook it up as sausage patties. It's a passable substitute in a pinch, but it ain't Jimmy Dean. To say that we are excited about this bag o' sausage is an understatement, lol!

Ah, Jimmy Dean...it always reminds me of visits to the Southern states and is yet another reason I'm tempted to head to Debbie's part of the world! Look out, Debbie, I'm weakening!

What? No Bob Evans by you either? *wink* Or, Cracker Barrel? Jeez, what did y'all do up there to get punished like that? LOL

Well, I have never heard of Tennessee Pride, that is a new one. So I looked it up on the internet and it looks like mighty fine sausage. I promise to try it when I have the chance.

Nope, no Bob Evans, no Cracker Barrel up here. I'm not a big fan of either though. I've eaten at them both, just once for each, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I had something called "Chicken Fried Steak" at Cracker Barrel but it was not chicken! It was some other kind of meat. Very weird.

Ewwwwww!!! Didn't wash the pig comment had me going ewwwwwwwww!!

Jimmy Dean is the favorite around here, too. I don't eat it as often anymore, uh, not because of cholestoral or blood pressure or anything like that. *smile*

Oh, and let me tell you, I so know we are *related*!! The first time I ate at Cracker Barrel, I was sure it would be my last. I ordered the SAME thing! That chicken fried steak!! Can you believe that! And It was awful!!
It took a lot of coaxing to get me to go back. I finally gave in and went, and now, it is one of my favorite places. I have never ordered that chicken fried steak again! (You're right, it's not chicken. It's some kind of steak.)

Oh, and also I really like the gift shop at Cracker Barrel. I got a cute little sleeper for my God-daughter who was just a few months old at the time. We went to Cracker Barrel in Charlotte, nc over by the airport. It had a beautiful huge stone fireplace in the dining room. It must be a popular place because it was packed when we went. It's one of my inlaws favourite restaurants!
