The other federal election

Canada will be going to the polls on October 14, one day after Thanksgiving. The election was called yesterday.

Which means we'll have a new government before our neighbours to the south have even finished their (endless YEARS of) campaigning. *Smirk*

Doesn't it make you wish you were Canadian?

It seems to me that that teh CA system assumes y'all pay attention IN BETWEEN the elections so you know who is up to what and you can vote intelligently. *wink*

It seems that as a group all we do is gripe and moan and complain about our elected officials and ignore them hoping they'll go away EXCEPT for the 9...12...18 months before they run when they get their lives torn apart by the media! LOL

But, I bet not knowing when the next election is, that it could be at any time, keeps your pols on their toes behaving each and every day! *wink*

Oh trust me, they get complacent too, no doubt about it. I guess the obvious advantage to having brief campaigns leading up to an election is there is less distraction from the ordinary work of governing in between.

Just read a blurb in our local paper that said your PM is calling the election on the chance of losing the current nobody's-a-majority gov't...and of course his party could benefit with more seats so they can get some of their stuff/plans done! LOL Sounds a tad convenient if not a whole lot self-serving! LOL Is that pretty typical?

With a minority government it can be, yes. The problem is, this government is conservative and is unable to pass legislation because they don't have enough seats. All the other parties will join together and vote against them. So a lot of the good stuff that we'd like to see them do (good if you're a conservative that is) they can't do. The timing of this election is no accident, believe me. Right now the Conservatives are enjoying a large margin in the polls and they hope that by calling the election now they can win a majority and govern for another 4 years. I personally hope they are able to win a majority; if they don't people will be p.o'd that we had to go to the polls for another minority government. Our last election was in Jan. 2006 so it wasn't all that long ago...
