She's the "Woman of EVERY Year" to me

Last night my mom and I attended the K-W Oktoberfest Women of the Year awards ceremony. My mom was nominated in the "Seniors" category for the work she does running a school breakfast program.

There were 64 nominees for 7 different categories. My mom did not win for her category, for which she was greatly relieved. I don't know what she would have done if she had won and had to accept her award and make a speech in front of all those people. That's so far out of her comfort zone it's not even funny. I suppose she would have dragged me up and made me say something. (I'm not kidding. She's done it before.)

She might have been relieved, but I was kinda disappointed. How can you not be when it's your mom? But the woman who won sure was deserving of the recognition. She's an 86 year old and she runs an inner-city community center! Pretty amazing.

I did know one of the winners though. Amanda Kind, who won in the Arts & Culture category, is an employee for one of our clients, Drayton Entertainment. When she won, I leaned over and whispered to my mom, "I fixed her email once". (My mom was suitably impressed.)

My mom and I went alone to the ceremony. My mom, predictably, DIDN'T TELL ANYONE so nobody knew she was even nominated. She was quite embarrassed to be singled out. So we were pleased and surprised that Mrs. Annette Webber, the school principal (now retired) who began the breakfast club came to give her support to my mom. We had a lovely time chatting and catching up. It turns out that Annette helped write my mom's nomination. Humble though she is about the whole thing, I know it meant a lot to my mom that Annette came, and from a fair distance too - she lives about an hour out of town.

We didn't tell my mom (and she couldn't see it, being legally blind) that the event was being taped for television. She would have fainted. It's going to be aired on Monday and I'm going to try and tape it.

Here's a few pictures...

congratulations to your mom! Quite an honor!

Did I ever tell you that every time I see a picture of you, I'm shocked by how young you are. Now take this the right way: the words you write are so full of wisdom (and you have nearly grown children!!!!), I have a hard time remembering that you're not much older than I. I think you need to grow some gray (or is it grey? I always forget how to spell it) so the outside of your head matches the inside.

You do not look old enough to have grown children. It's so good to put a face with the name. I'm so glad you had a nice time with your mom. She sound like my mom when it comes to people paying attention to her. If we are at a public function and people start talking about her, she is looking for the nearest table to crawl under. It is such a blessing to have these examples of mature, modest, chaste women instead of the current trend of older women seeking to look and act and receive "wisdom" from the younger women.

Sara and Leigh Ann - *giggling* Oh, I'm old enough - I'm 41! But it is very sweet of you to flatter me. Sara honey, it's spelled "grey" and it's called "Miss Clairol"...

Lisa - *SQUEAL* - how the heck are ya girl?? Long time no see! Glad to hear you got some time with hubby. Goes by fast, doesn't it.

Can I say "amen" to Sara's comment? LOL And, since you revealed the number of your years of wisdom (*wink*), got any suggestions for how I should gracefully turn FORTY in the spring? LOL

And, with all due respect to my mom, I wish I'd have had an example like that while I was growing up. How different is your mom's generation is to the next...*sigh*

Congrats to her!! How cool!

You and your Mom look so lovely! I'm glad that you had a wonderful time. And yes, you do look VERY VERY young. :) I have a few years to go before 40 (very few, I might add!) and I hope that I look like you when I get there.
