Turkey Day Menu

Beth thinks I forgot the rutabaga - did not!! I simply didn't cook it yesterday. C'mon now, what is turkey dinner without rutabaga?

Here's the entire menu if you're interested:

~ turkey with onion, sage & garlic dressing
~ ham
~ mashed and gravy
~ carrots & rutabaga
~ red cabbage
~ green beans
~ my famous homemade cranberry sauce
~ rolls & butter

Pie and ice cream for dessert...if anybody's able to eat more after all that.

Beth, the red cabbage? I always used to make it from scratch but shhhh...this year I bought some canned stuff. I tried it earlier this year and I can't tell the difference. But if you were to make it, you braise thinly sliced red cabbage and grated apple in wine vinegar with brown sugar, onion and cloves. It has a sweet and sour taste. I remember you were skeptical when I told you it's my favourite Christmas dish, but it really is tasty!

I did not realize you were not from the states! Isn't rutabega..(sp)the veggie that got Rapunzels mom in trouble?

Two things....
1) you are virtuous.
2) now I am hungry.

LOL I *knew* there had to be rutabaga in their somewhere! "Bashed neeps and champed tatties" were a staple at my grandma's house at T-giving when I was a wee lass! *wink*

Are you a in-the-bird or out-of-the-bird stuffing person?

And, since DaHubby's family are SUCH cabbage nuts, I may just try the red cabbage for our T-giving next month.

Enjoy your extra day of rest...

Um...rutabaga!??? I did not know they even grew those nasty things up north! My mom used to cook them with their green tops when I was a kid.

Sounds like a yummy T'giving dinner, minus the rutabeggers as we call them in the south!

Try cooking the rutabaga with the carrots. I don't know why but they are much better together. I'm not sure I'd eat rutabaga all on it's own.

Anita,
(you still remember me, right?)(sheepish half-smile)

I'm SO sorry I've been so scarce lately... I just posted a new blog entry a little bit ago.

Oh my! I LOVE reading your blog!!! I just read everything you've posted since the last time I was on here and wow, I've laughed, been inspired, and just plain ENJOYED catching up on what's going on in your life! I really think you should publish a book!!!

I'm SO happy for you and Debbie having plans to meet. I'm envious too, and yes, I know that's a sin and I'll have to pray about that... but wow, I would SO love to be there with you too!!!

I know you'll have a GREAT time and I can't wait to see pics!

We need to talk on the phone so I can hear your wonderful "accent." I have no idea what kind of an accent I have... when I lived for nearly 10 years in southern Texas I developed a strong southern accent, but I moved from there 15 years ago and have lived in WA, CA, and now Ohio since!

I need to go look for time zones. That's what's kept me from calling you yet - I don't know what time it is where you are and I don't want to call at a ridiculous time!!!

Well, please read my comment to you on my blog too...

I've missed you and I love you!!!
HUGS, Marilee
